Before being able to review anything, I need to carry it with me to a boat. It often all goes into a big duffel bag and then I drag it around from boat to boat. Here is what I carry with me when I’m off on charter in a warm place. Evidently, some are affiliate links you can use.
Clothes
This one is pretty straight forward. I won’t go into the brand of my underwear, but here is a list of things I carry apart from the obvious.
- Offshore jacket (Helly Hansen Aegir Race)
- Offshore pants (Helly Hansen Skagen)
- Booney Hat (Buff Booney Hat)
- Deck boots
- Flip flops
- Skate shoes
Comfort in the skipper's cabin
A skipper’s cabin doesn’t always have all the modern commodities we are used to. Being able to charge your phone overnight or just keeping cool enough to sleep becomes a struggle.
- Rechargeable fan (Mine is similar to this)
- Portable battery bank (Iniu portable battery)
- Headlamp (Everbeam H6 Pro)
Making life easy
None of these are essential but they tend to be my way of making my life easy. They include some redundancy but as most sailors know, you would need a second identical boat just as a spare if it was possible.
- Handheld VHF (Standard Horizon HX890)
- iPad Pro 12.9 WiFi + cellular (for the GPS chip)
- Hose connector (for connecting two hoses)
- Tap adapter
- Spare cellphone
- Navionics Subscription
- Spare charging cables
- Pens
- Coffee
- Coffee pour over (GSI outdoors)
Fixing Things
Almost every boat needs a quick fix here and there. I carry the essential things that I know are not part of a standard tool kit to get one done.
- Super glue (Gorilla Glue)
- Duct tape (if 3M makes it, buy their version)
- Cable ties
- A good folding knife (Opinel N08 Outdoor)
First Aid Kit
Wether it is a small scrape or something more serious, I try to keep the things I need most with me. I started off with a pre made kit and eventually just added more into the pouch.
With all that, you should be ready to skipper a charter. Evidently, we all have our own essentials we carry around the world but this should be a good start.
